B. subtilis are able to remain dormant for long periods of time, and awaken when moisture and nutrients become available. Within 5 months, they turn up to 90 per cent of plastic into biodegradable plastic.

According to the scientists, the next step will be to expand the range of biodegradable materials to take account of the latest achievement.
